Amendment of EU Honey Directive

vote in ENVI Committee on 19 March

Dear Ms. Hassi,

F.E.E.D.M. is the European Federation of Honey Packers and Distributors and represents the interests of the EU honey trade. Please note that our members are directly affected by the proposed amendment of the EU Directive relative to Honey clarifying that pollen is not an ingredient of honey. We fully support this position.

The compromise text as a result of the trilogue negotiations fully covers the mandate and the positions of the European Parliament as voted in Plenary on 15 January 2014. For this reason we kindly ask you to support the compromise text, which shall be brought to vote according to our information in the ENVI Committee on 19 March 2014.

We support the compromise text for the following reasons:

-

Honey is a non-compound foodstuff, it is 100% natural.

-

Pollen is not an ingredient in honey. Pollen is not deliberately added to honey by the beekeeper. Pollen gets into the honey mainly through the bees, when foraging nectar and pollen.

-

The Codex Alimentarius Standard defines honey as a non-compound foodstuff.

-

The consumers’ perception is that honey is a traditional mono-product.

It is important to

preserve this consumers’ perception.

-

The ruling of the European Court of Justice (in the case C-442/09) is not touched: honey with pollen of in the EU for foodstuffs NOT authorized GM plants remains forbidden.

-

The EU Regulation on genetically modified food and feed applies on honey containing GMO regardless of the proposed amendment.

We thank you in advance for giving our concern the appropriate consideration and ask for your vote in favour of the proposed amendment of the EU Honey Directive.

Best regards,

Dr. Katrin Langner Secretary General
