Topics: Secual Exploitation and Prostitution
Organisations: CAP International

Dublin, Berlin, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, Brussels – Tuesday 25 february 2014

Dear Member of the European Parliament, CAP international and its members wish to express their strong endorsement of the motion for a European Parliament resolution on « sexual exploitation and prostitution, and its impact on gender equality » to be voted in plenary session by the European Parliament. CAP international is a coalition of frontline NGOs who are collectively providing direct social, legal and medical assistance to thousands of women and men affected by prostitution in Europe. Based on this direct grassroots experience, we can affirm that prostitution is :

A form of violence in itself, whose harmful consequences on physical and psychological health are extremely serious.

A fundamental obstacle to equality between women and men, richer and poorer countries, majority groups and minorites.

A violation of human integrity, and a commodification of the human body that is incompatible with human dignity.

A violation of human rights, as recognised by the UN Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others.

We also draw attention to the Brussels Call « Together for a Europe free from Prostitution », which has been signed by more that 200 NGOs and Civil Society Groups from accross Europe, including many of the undersigned. This call advocates for policies which recognise the harm of prostitution and do not criminalise those in prostitution but tackle the structures that perpetuate this exploitation.

The draft

report « sexual exploitation and prostitution and its impact on gender equality » is wholly compatible with these recommendations. Another strong point of recommendation for this motion for a resolution is the fact that it is consistent with the European Parliament resolution of the 6th of February 2013 on the « Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls » adopted in view of the 57th session of the UN Conference on the Status of Women. Thank you for your kind attention. We hope that you will support the adoption of this motion for a EP resolution. Yours sincerely, CAP international's members Ruhama (Ireland) Reden International (Denmark) Malos Tratos (Spain) Solwodi (Germany) Mouvement du Nid (France)
